The President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and an advid reader, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., has written a recent article about the demise of the bookstore in light of the announcement that Borders bookstore is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy. This is certainly a telling development in the world of books. The rise of digital and e-books along with websites like Amazon and Christian Book Distributors has created a lot of problems for companies like Borders. Mohler concludes:

Mike Shatzkin thinks the handwriting is already on the wall — “Book stores are going away.” He may be right, but I hold out hope that he is not. If he is, it is far more than bookstores that we will lose.

Can We All Just Have a Civil Discussion? Colson's Plea in USA Today

Today Charles Colson, of Prison Fellowship and writer of the Breakpoint commentaries, has written a brief piece in USA Today regarding the bashing of those who oppose gay marriage. Colson writes:

The hundreds of homosexual inmates I have met with and those dying of AIDS I have cradled in my arms would be surprised to hear that. So would anyone who has read the Manhattan Declaration, which states in the clearest possible terms that gays and lesbians should be respected and treated with dignity because they are made in the image of God.

There is an honest disagreement in America about whether the institution of marriage, embraced by every civilization in history, should be redefined. But isn't it possible to have a civil discussion and to disagree without calling one another names?

That is the real question we need to ask ourselves, but honestly I don't see us ever having an honest dialogue over this issue really on either side. This is certainly an emotional issue, but it has also become an issue of platitudes and name-calling. I encourage you to read the rest of Colson's piece linked below. As Christians our concern isn't just over gay marriage or even over certain ethical and moral issues. Instead, our focus is on the liberating gospel of Jesus Christ which sets us free from the bondage of our idolatry. Gay or straight, married or single, licentious or religious. Jesus Christ can set us free. That is where we need to be taking the conversation.

A good one from Charles Colson today at his Breakpoint blog/podcast. Today, Colson discusses the issue of Superbowl Ads and what some of them say about our moral compass. He writes:

Every year, however, some proposed ads don’t make the cut because they are too “controversial.” You’ll recall that one starring Tim Tebow and his mother last year was almost pulled because of its pro-life message. Thank heavens it aired! But this year, there’s one ad I’m very glad to say you won’t see. It’s an ad that promotes the website of a company called Ashley Madison.

This site isn’t offering career help or a new line of women’s clothes. No, Ashley Madison promotes good, old-fashioned adultery. In the ad, a scantily clad woman, played by a porn star, apparently is getting excited by the fact that her husband is cheating on her.

The Fox network, rightly, rejected the ad. Ashley Madison responded by claiming that it is evidence of—I kid you not—an unfair bias against porn stars. Folks, you can’t make this stuff up! I hope there is still some kind of bias against porn stars on prime time television.

The fact is, though, that in this morally confused culture, we face constant pressure in our media, in our institutions, and in our daily interactions to do the wrong thing, to cut corners, to indulge in self-gratification, to cheat. For example, a new movie called No Strings Attached starts off with the increasingly popular notion that some of us are just too busy to work on relationships, and so having sex with no commitment—no strings attached—is a perfectly acceptable “lifestyle choice.”

And we wonder why the rates of divorce and broken families are soaring, not to mention sexually transmitted diseases. Rightly did the existential philosopher Albert Camus warn, “A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon the world.”

Excellent point here. Though as Christians we would change the quote at the end. A man without the gospel is like a wild beast loosed upon the world. Immorality can be rationalized as ethical with fallen man. The gospel is transcendent and unchangeable.

Here is another insightful video promoting the 10th anniversary of the book Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth? by Jonathan Wells. This video regards the infamous ape to man pictures we've all seen. The author shows how ridiculous and mytholigical these pictures are. These images are artistic renderings apart from any evidence whatsoever. The fossil record is rather empty and is a serious threat to the many claims of evolution.

Wells also notes that so far there has been no evidence of evolution across species (like ape to man), but only evolution within species. This is a huge blow to evolution and one that few acknowledge.

Our buddy is at it again. Atheist lawyer Michael Newdow is now suing to have the phrase "In God We Trust" taken off all US currency again. It didn't work out the first time, maybe second time is a charm (or something like that). Newdow is perhaps best known for his suing the nation seeking to take out the "Under God" phrase from the National Pledge of Allegiance. He has also sued due to biblical content in Californian school textbooks and sought to prevent Chief Justice John Roberts from making President Barack Obama from reciting "so help me God" at his inauguration.

I think comedian Brad Stine sums up persons like Newdow the best:

Dude, your an atheist. You don't even believe God is real, how can he offend you? Which is more rational, a guy who believes in a God he cannot see or a guy who is offended by a god he doesn't believe in?

Fox News is the only major news outlet I have seen on TV that has highlighted the rise of persecution against Christians in the middle East (particularly in Egypt and Iraq). Today they ran a news story on it and then had a panel discuss the issue. It is rare that anyone in the West highlights the recent events against our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us keep them in our prayers.

Who Says You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat it Too: The Lie of Contraceptives & Rare Abortions

The Baptist Press has reported on some interesting statistics. According to the article, the increase of available and use of contraceptives has only increased the number of abortions, not decreased them. This goes against the conventional wisdom which has argued for decades that when pregnancies can be prevented abortions will become more rare. The article quotes one such supporter of contraceptives as saying, The reasons for the increasing rate of elective abortion warrant further investigation. Something tells me they will still miss the obvious. What they didn't consider (primarily out of a faulty understanding of human nature) is how contraceptives increase of promiscuity thus increasing the chances of "unwanted" pregnancies.

The article goes on to quote reads pro-life leader Christina Dunigan who wrote:

"Researchers scratched their heads in bewilderment, likely because they don't understand risk compensation. If you reduce the perceived risks of a behavior, people will compensate by behaving in higher-risk ways.

She added, "The Pill Pushers have chosen to ignore the data, and the reality of how human beings work. The more you create an environment in which people perceive sex as low-risk, the more people will engage in risky sex."

This should be obvious and yet our secular culture will miss it. This is not at all to suggest that contraceptives should be avoided, but that we should not be fooled into thinking that abortion has never been about contraception or that "safe" sex is foolproof. I do believe that contraceptives have their proper place (between a married man and a woman), but our culture's firm belief in the curse of children has brought us to this point. We have moved sex from one-flesh intimacy to sport and thrill. Sex has become inherently self-centered, thus making children a curse. Only when we see children as a blessing and abortion as murder of the highest rank can we recover our moral high ground. So long as we remain this secular and loss, the numbers will only get much worse and the blindness of our culture will somehow only increase.

Who would have thought encouraging sex and promoting abortion as the "last resort" contraceptive would increase the practice of abortion? And who said you could have your cake and eat it too? We need a moral recovery. We need a gospel revival.

This is interesting. Fox News and nationally syndicated radio host Glenn Beck offers his explanation of the thousands of birds and fish found dead in droves. I must admit that this is all kind of weird and it seems that once the first story broke, dozens of others came to the forefront. Beck's argument is that things like this happen but often remains unreported as they are natural events. He makes a compelling case.

One should note however that Beck's point in all of this isn't to explain what is going on, but to make a bigger point about trust and the fact that we no longer really trust the media or politicians (have we ever trusted politicians). But nonetheless, its an interesting video.

One of my favorite debunks of evolution regards the infamous fruit fly. As the following video explains, scientists were able to mutate a fruit fly (after many tries) and give the fly an extra set of wings. This was lauded as proof of evolution when it fact it proved the opposite. The extra pair of wings had no muscles in them and thus slowed the fly down and made it harder to fly due to the extra weight.

The conclusion of the video is great. Mutations have been proven to do 1 of 3 things.

1. Nothing
2. Defection
3. Death

Dr. Jonathan Wells thus concludes, "Mutations are highly overrated." Dido.

CNS News recently interviewed Democratic Congressman Barney Frank regarding gays in the military. The question is simple: now that Don't Ask, Don't Tell has been abolished and gays are allowed to openly serve in the military, should gay men and straight men shower in the same facility? After all, straight men and straight women don't. The following video records Frank's answer:

I get Frank's point, but he fails to see the point of what others are saying. If men and women cannot shower together because of their "sexual orientation" then why should gay men or gay women? In addition, the military doesn't want to put their service people in awkward or potentially dangerous positions as a result of mixing sexual appetites in the shower. So again, is it not equally dangerous for a straight man to be in the same shower with a gay man in the same way that as it is for a woman to be in the shower with a straight man?

Frank's righting off of the question is unfortunate. This is something, I believe, that needs to be debated instead of being swept under the rug. This is the problem with repealing DADT, but apparently it was too politically incorrect to consider it.

Colson on the Persecution of Christians in Iraq

One of the saddest parts of the Iraq War has been without a doubt the great increase in persecution against Christians in that country. Christians are being forced to flee or else they will be killed by radical Muslims. Recently, Charles Colson wrote a major commentary at his Breakpoint site regarding how finally someone in the mainstream media has taken note and reported on the mass exodos of Christians in Iraq. Colson then writes:

And, sad to say, the action or inaction of the U. S. government has played a major role in the situation. No doubt the U.S. government never intended to place Christians in the crosshairs of Islamist radicals, but the invasion of Iraq prepared the ground for what Nina Shea at Freedom House has called a “ruthless cleansing campaign by Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish militants.”

What’s scandalous is that the U.S. has done precious little about it. I have no doubt that if the Administration were to pressure the Iraqi government—including threatening to cut off aid—the persecution would either stop, or at least the Iraqi government would start to make honest efforts to end the bloodshed. And you and I need to tell the Administration and Congress that the U. S. government must not tolerate such blatant persecution.

Maybe the Administration’s silence on the issue has something to do with its effort to improve relations with the Muslim world—an effort I applaud. But we can’t remain silent for fear of offending Muslims. Even if, as a reputable pollster told me, up to 18 percent of Muslims hold radical views and support religious violence, that means 80 percent or more do not. It is those peace-loving Muslims we should enlist in the fight against the radical Islamist worldview and the barbarians who embrace religious bloodshed.

After all, we believe in the words of the Declaration of Independence. “All men,” that’s including Muslims, as well as Iraqi Christians, “are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.” Religious freedom is one of those rights. So when our men and women go into combat around the world, they are fighting not just for the rights of Christians, but for Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, —that is, for the rights of all people.

There are some insightful words here. The silence from our "Christian" nation is deafening. If we have really fought for freedom in Iraq, then it is time that we start demanding it.

HIV Cured?

This is an interesting development in the medical and scientific world. Many pro-lifers have pointed out that adult stem cell research not only is ethically and morally neutral since he doesn't take any life, it has also shown the most promise. Embryonic stem cell research, on the other hand, seems to only kill life with little to no promise. Take the recent headline for example. Fox News reports: Doctors Claim HIV-Positive Man Cured by Stem Cell Transplant. They report:

Timothy Ray Brown, an HIV-positive American living in Germany, had leukemia and was undergoing chemotherapy, when he received a transplant of stem cells from a donor carrying a rare, inherited gene mutation that seems to make carriers virtually immune to HIV infection.

The transplant appeared to wipe out both diseases, giving hope to doctors . . .

So has HIV been cured through adult stem cell research? Not quit. The story goes on:

but Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has been studying HIV/AIDS for almost 30 years, said while this is an interesting proof of concept, it’s absurdly impractical.

“It’s hard enough to get a good compatible match for a transplant like this,” Fauci told FoxNews.com, “But you also have to find compatible donor that has this genetic defect, and this defect is only found in 1 percent of the Caucasian population and zero percent of the black population. This is very rare.”

Fauci said while this patient is “functionally cured” this is not something you can do with every HIV-infected individual.

So though it is way too premature to claim that one of the world's biggest killers (hello Africa and the West) has been defeated, this story does show that adult stem cells continue to show a lot of promise. As a pro-lifer I wholeheartedly encourage our culture to put all of its funds and focus on the research that is showing the most (and almost exclusive) promise in actually healing things without the moral dilemma of killing life.

In our advanced age, its hard telling what the next headline will say, but without a doubt there is much to hope for in the future. However, let us not forget that for every disease cured, many more takes its place. Let us pray that God intervenes, protects us, we make wise decisions to prevent them in our own lives and of course, come Lord Jesus quickly!

I am a huge Louisville Cardinal fan and it has been difficult watching the football team in recent years, but this year has been much different. Though they were held to a 6-6 record, the team will be heading to their first bowl game since winning the Orange bowl 4 years ago. This is new head coach Charlie Strong's first year at Louisville and since the retirement of Florida Gator head coach Urban Meyer, many have speculated that Strong would consider leaving Louisville for the position (Strong was the defensive coordinator at Florida for years under Meyer).

Strong responded today with the following:

I will say this, an athletic director hired me and he gave me the keys to this program and I owe him a lot and I will never ever chase a job and I am totally committed to this job here. I can't see myself, when you talk about character, you talk about respect, you talk about sacrifice, I don't see myself walking out on a program in one year to go chase another job.

This is rare to hear from the world of sports today. There is a lot to learn in this one quote beyond football. Do I care more about myself, or fulfilling the responsibilities I have been given? Do I serve my ego or others? As a pastor, am I more interested in serving Christ or working my way up the religious ladder? As a husband? As a father? As a man? As a Christian? As a human being?

Federal Judge: Obamacare Unconstitutional

This is breaking news: A Virginia Federal judge has ruled that the new health care law passed this passed year and signed by President Barack Obama is unconstitutional. But before those who affirm the judge's decision gets too excited do not forget that this is really just a formality. This is just like the Proposition 8 monkey trials. Regardless of the outcome, this case is going to the Supreme Court. That is where the real fight will be had. But nonetheless, this is big because if the Supreme Court does not take up the case (which is doubtful), then the Federal judges ruling stands. At the same time, this does set a legal precedent for the unconstitutionality of the new law.

I'm not interested in looking at the argument made here as they aren't really anything new. Nonetheless, whatever side on this issue you are on, one can agree that the next year should be interesting.

Is Overpopulation a Myth?

Consider the following video:

Although I agree with the overall argument of this video there are a few things to point out. First, the statistic that says that everyone in the world could fit in the state of Texas and still have a house and a yard (and apparently a dog) is a little misleading. The overpopulation alarmism usually has to deal with food and global warming and fitting everybody in one state doesn't remove the problem being raised. The issue of food and manmade global warming remains regardless of whether or not the world population can in Texas.

Secondly, I don't understand the assertion that world population will peak in a few years and then begin to decline? How does that work? Where do they get this information?

With that said, beginning this myth with the radical alarmism of men like Thomas Malthus who was extremely radical and advocated, as the video rightly points out, murder. It was Darwinism on steroids as he wanted to kill the "feeble minded" and those unworthy to live. Furthermore, this sort of illogical alarmism continues today and many eschatological and apocalyptic fears have remained unfulfilled. I believe this explains, in many ways, why abortion is a sacrament among Darwinian secularists. Children are viewed as a curse under such nonsense.

More could be said and has been said on this issue, but this is an important video worth our consideration. Christians ought to be especially leery into buying into such arguments without seriously thinking about what is being said and what is being advocated as a result. Murder and sterilization are not things Christians can support under any circumstances.

The Criminization of Christianity Continued: Man Released After Two Years for Preaching Against Homosexuality

Another Christian arrested for voicing his religious convictions on the issue of homosexuality was arrested two years ago has finally been released and the court has ruled that he was unlawfully arrested. Certainly this is reason to rejoice that one of our brothers in Christ is now free, but the issue here runs deeper than meets the eye.

First, note how the police assumed that by voicing his concerns over homosexuality was illegal - at least in the way that this Christian did it. This is a significant point. Whenever homosexuality is legalized and normalized, detractors are treated as criminal bigots that ought to be silenced. The legalization of homosexuality always leads to the criminalization of punishing those who disagree with the new law. When this Christian man did publicly voice his disagreement with the lifestyle, the police arrested him. This is a drastic change from the policies of the West who champion free speech, freedom of religion, the freedom of assembly, and the freedom of expression.

Secondly, it is important to note that this man was arrested and his fate remained questioned for two whole years. Its not like this man was arrested and let go that same day, but after years of waiting the court finally determined to let the man go. This is the real shocking part. Not only was the man arrested, but the justice system considered him a criminal before releasing him for two years!

Christians need to wake up and realize that the more secular we become the more criminal we become. A secular culture loathes the message of Christianity and the call to repentance. This is why it is imperative that we not just change the outside of man through law, but also the inside of man through the gospel. Expect more similar stories to be released as Christians continue to be demonized by our Western culture. I am afraid that in our lifetime, the Church will truly know who are real believers and who are Christians in name only once a more serious persecution picks up.

Let us pray for the gospel!

The Marriage of Economic and Social Conservatism: George Will on Mike Pence

Political and conservative columnist George F. Will has written an interesting article recently entitled, Why Mike Pence catches conservatives' eyes. Mike Pence is a Representative from Indiana and a lot of conservatives have begun to call for him to make a run for the presidency. The fact that George Will would dedicate an entire column to him is interesting and says a lot about his chances of making a run for the nation's highest office.

One portion of the article was interesting to me:

To those who say conservatives should set aside social issues and stress only economic ones, Pence replies: Economic problems are urgent, but social problems remain important in a way that blurs the distinction between social and economic issues. With the fluency of a former talk radio host, he says: "You would not be able to print enough money in a thousand years to pay for the government you would need if the traditional family continues to collapse." This is, he says, "Moynihan writ large," referring to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's preoccupation with out-of-wedlock births, which now are 41 percent of all American births.

One can easily see why with rhetoric like this many social conservatives sympathetic to the Tea Party movement (which is more fiscally libertarian than anything) like Pence. It is important for Christians and conservatives to make the connection between economic and even national security conservatism with the social and moral direction of our country. Welfare drops when families stay together, children are not born out of wedlock, and each citizen takes responsibility for their own actions or inactions. It is dangerous to separate economic policy from social policy and a candidate that understands this would do our country much good.

Cold Weather The Fault of Global Warming: Why Many Continue to Reject Climate Change Alarmism

One of the reasons people deny manmade global warming (or global warming in general) is based on common sense and personal experience. Look around and note the weather. It is freezing. It makes sense to many that if the weather year around appears cooler than normal and new record lows are being set on almost a daily basis, then it is logical to conclude that global warming is utter nonsense. Certainly some days are hotter than others and it is misleading for climate change supporters to sound the alarm in the middle of summer or during winter to travel to a warm climate (like Cancun) and promote the manmade global warming ideology.

But also consider the following. Many have repeatedly argued that both warm and cool weather can be blamed on global warming. This argument was made recently in The Telegraph newspaper. The article suggests:

So why is it so bone-chillingly cold? Well, Prof Maslin thinks the cause of the big freeze can be found in the atmosphere. As Ewen McCallum, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, explains, this year and last have seen large areas of high pressure develop in the Atlantic, blocking the westerly winds and allowing chilly Arctic air to move south across Europe.

Winds from the east are always freezing – and at this time of year, the long nights cool the European land-mass more rapidly, meaning that the air remains bitterly cold when it reaches us. To make matters worse, the winds pick up moisture and heat as they cross the North Sea, which is dumped on us in the form of snow (explaining why coastal areas to the east have seen the heaviest falls).

But before we write off our current cold snap as the British weather playing its usual tricks, we still need to explain why the Arctic high pressure has strayed so far south. And here, says Prof Maslin, is the more likely, and more subtle, link with climate change. "For me," he says, "this shows that the climate is becoming more dynamic, and thus large shifts in the wind patterns are possible – in this case, sub-tropical air being trapped further south than usual."

In other words, we need to remember that while the average temperature is rising, climate change also delivers more extreme weather, from chills to heatwaves. Today, we're stocking up on snowshoes – but best to invest in some air-conditioning as well.

Regardless of what one things of the secular eschatology of global warming and climate change, the argument that cold weather is directly connected to global warming is one that the average person will never understand or buy into. And to make matters worse, Cancun, the place where many climate change alarmist and movers and shakers are meeting to deal with the "crisis" (no word of whether Al Gore is there or not), is experiencing some of its coolest climate to date. Ironic isn't it?

Condoms Aren't the Solution: HIV, the Porn Inudstry, and the Folly of Separating Consequences From Our Decisions

The LA Times has published an interview with a former male porn star who participated in both straight and homosexual acts on film who has contracted HIV. The young man is calling for the porn industry to start requiring its performers to wear condoms at all times. What I find most interpreting about this interview is how our culture continues to want sexual liberation without consequences. This is really the purpose behind the modern birth control movement in addition to the push for abortions on demands and the denigration of marriage. In our over-sexed culture we want the sex but not the consequences, and this young man never once complains about the industry which spreads sexually transmitted diseases, but with the lack of concern over the necessity of wearing condoms.

Consider the last sentence: "Making $10,000 or $15,000 for porn isn't worth your life," he said. "Performers need to be educated." I don't think education is the problem, its the entire industry and how it only encourages the spread of such consequences. No matter how hard we try, it is impossible to separate immorality from its dangerous consequences.

Now What Are They Going To Do?

The controversy over the new TSA scanners and pat downs and the motivation behind the new regulations is in response to recent attempted terrorist attacks. It seems that our government responds to new strategies from terrorist rather than anticipate what they might do next. Note this headline: Frankenbombers are 'new kind of terrorism': Al Qaeda hopes to surgically implant bombs into thugs.

So this begs the question, what is the TSA going to do next if terrorist start implanting bombs? Will this finally force us to abandon political correctness at airports? I wouldn't hold my breath, but one must wonder.

Mohler on the Cow Towns of David and Solomon: A Lesson in Presuppositions

As some are likely aware, the cover story for the latest National Geographic magazine regards the kingdoms of Kings David and Solomon as recorded in the Bible. They argue that based on recent archeological scholarship, these "kings" "ruled" over the equivalent of "cow towns" rather than a large nation as the Bible suggests. Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written a helpful article in response to National Geographic's claim. He writes early on:

Tel Aviv University archaeologist Israel Finkelstein argues that the kingdom of David and Solomon is a greatly embellished biblical fiction. Jerusalem, he argues, was a cow town, a “hill country village.” David was an insurrectionist and bandit whose followers were not a mighty army, but “500 people with sticks in their hands shouting and cursing and spitting.”

All this is reported in the cover story of the December 2010 edition of National Geographic magazine. That magazine, you will remember, made its own headlines just a few years ago with the claim of a “Jesus family tomb” which was supposed to cast doubt upon the New Testament accounts of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. That “discovery,” by the way, did not stand up to close investigation.

Mohler, at the end of the day, offers the conclusion:

Nevertheless, Christian readers of the magazine should note a couple of key observations. First, this cover story documents the fact that archaeology is not an exact science and that the discipline is heavily influenced by ideological interests. Claims and counter-claims often have as much or more to do with those contemporary agendas than with the study of ancient civilizations.

Second, Christians should always remember that the truthfulness and authority of the Bible are not based upon any authority external to the Bible itself. There is no external evidence required to “prove” the Bible’s truthfulness. It stands on its own claim to be the Word of God. Archaeology may sell magazines and make for interesting reading, but it cannot prove nor disprove the Bible.

That last sentence is particularly important, but the reminder that these "discoveries" are often driven by ideology is important. Both sides of the argument, whether secular/anti-biblical and Christian, come to their studies with presupposition. That is something to remember when reading the news and listening to the latest arguments for or against the claims of Scripture.

The Grinch Has Officially Arrived: Changing Christmas to Holiday . . . Again

Well you knew it wouldn't take long before the Christmas Grinch would show its ugly face again. This time the ugly Grinch is showing itself in Philadelphia where the German Christmas Village is being changed to German Holiday Village. The Philedelphia Inquirer reports:

It turns out that the letters spelling "Christmas" were removed yesterday afternoon from the archways on the north and west sides of the plaza, at the request of Managing Director Richard Negrin. They will be replaced with the word "Holiday."

City spokesman Mark McDonald said Negrin asked for the change after the city received complaints from workers and residents.

"As a city of great diversity, one shouldn't be surprised that there's a difference of views when it comes to symbols and words," McDonald said.

Sigh! As has been the tradition for the past several years, expect more of this nonsense to continue this Christmas (or should I say Holiday) season. I find it hypocritical that we say nothing over art depicting Jesus as a homosexual or covered with ants but heaven forbid somebody put up a sign that says Christmas.

Update - The mayor has ust annonced that he will put the word "Christmas" back on display though I'm not really impressed with his reasoning. I think he is hiding the truth that he has changed his mind due to pressure, but his public response is rather shallow:

Nutter said the decision came after "personal reflection" on the matter.

"We are an international, multi-ethnic, multi-faith city," Nutter said. "I took some time to step back from all of this to think about it in a larger context."

Nutter, who said he had nothing to do with the orignal conversations with the organizer that lead to the letters being removed, downplayed how much impact the national news coverage had on the decision. Nutter said that he felt the village was not necessarily a religious site.

"The Christmas Village is not a religious service. It's an outdoor fair. It's a very commercial enterprise," Nutter said.

Fox News and 9/11 Truthers

Though at first I was a little surprised, upon further thought I'm not as shocked that some hosts on Fox News are either giving credibility or openly endorsing the 9/11 Truth crowd who believe that 9/11 was an inside job. Many have debunked those who have promoted this view in spite of the online, growing community of Americans who are still convinced that the government attacked us. The two host in question on Fox News are Geraldo Rivera and Judge Andrew Napolitano. The Judges confession is particularly intersting as he did it on the Alex Jones radio show who is well known for his belief in many conspirasy theories and is a leading 9/11 Truther voice.

I believe that the reason this is gaining speed on Fox News instead of the other news networks right now is because of their preference for conservatism and libertarianism. Judge Napolitano is a good example of this. Napolitano is an ardent libertarian and is well known for his dislike for the government and his desire to drastically shrink the government to its pre-civil war days. I believe, upon thinking more about it, that conspiracy theorists, including those connected with 9/11, have found a friend in libertarians because of their mutual distrust of the government. Alex Jones admits to likeing almost everything Napolitano stands form revealing his own libertarianism and distrust of the government.

It will be interesting to see where all of this goes in the coming days and weeks. My theory is that nothing will happen as both of these men are quit popular on Fox News. However, though I myself ain't the biggest fan of our overgrown government, I am hesitant to believe (especially in light of the clear evidence of the contrary) that the government was behind 9/11.

Allah Be Blessed?: Obama's Grandmother Prays for the President's Conversion to Islam

This can't be good for the President, but then again, I'm not surprised that the media hasn't made this a bigger story than it is. Remember the talk of several months ago that a fourth of Americans believe that our President is a Muslim in spite of his efforts to tell the American people that he was a Christian. I argued that the President really isn't either. Instead, he is a secularists who works in the framework and theology of a secularists. The label of Christian or even Muslim doesn't really change anything.

The Telegraph is reporting that President Barack Obama's grandmother is praying that "he converts to Islam." Grant it, Obama's grandmother is a resident of Kenya where the President spent some time of his childhood. It is common knowledge that the President does in fact have a Muslim background and by the looks of his actions as President has a soft spot (as compared to his predecessor) for the Islamic faith and people/culture.

They report:

Sarah Omar, 88, who was on hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, told the Al-Qatan Saudi daily: "I prayed for my grandson Barack to convert to Islam".

The paper said that Ms Omar was in Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage along with her son, Mr Obama's uncle Saeed Hussein Obama, and four of her grandchildren.

Certainly comments like this from family members of the President won't help his image to those Americans who have a reasonable fear of Islam because of its association for Jihad and terrorism. Stories like this force us to rethink the President's background and how it is shaping his current policy and political mentality. So far little press has been given to this story and I don't see that changing, but it seems that as long as Obama is the President, stories like this won't go away and as a result, don't expect Americans to change their opinion no matter how many times the Obama's go to worship at a Washington, DC Christian church.

Blair vs. Hitchens: The Debate On Religion

Recently, former Prime Minister of Britain Tony Blair and cancer-stricken and world renowned atheist Christopher Hitchens debated the benefits (or lack there-of) of religion. As you can imagine, Hitchens essentially argues that religion is essentially a cancer (no pun intended) in a society that should be eradicated. Blair argues the contrary. I have not seen the whole debate but I find the pairing interesting. The two men are from different perspectives and probably not the best fight. Hitchens is an intellectual who has made a living bashing men like Blair. Blair, on the other hand, is a politician who can give good speeches, but probably isn't best equipped for a fight like this.

Free At Last: Christian Woman Off Death Role in Pakistan

On the one hand this is great news especially for the Christian woman whose life is being spared after being sentenced to death in Pakistan for blasphemy. In other words, according to Pakistani law, she committed a capital offense just by converting to Christianity. Fortunetly the President of Pakistan has set her free and thus she will not be executed. What concerns me, however, is the fact that this is law in Pakistan and many other Muslim countries. If it weren't for human rights and Christian groups putting pressure on the Pakistani government, this woman would still be on death row and her family (including her children) would have to suffer through the lost of their loved one.

This is all a reminder of the ongoing assault the world continues to unleash against the cause of Christ. Compared to the rest of the world, though Christians face some forms of persecution even from our own government, Christians in America live in a dream world. To prove it, one must acknowledged that this very post would be illegal in many other countries. Let us continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are on the front lines of the battle and that they may stand strong in the day of persecution always careful to bear a godly, Christ-like witness for the sake of the gospel - even if it costs them their very lives. And we Christians here in America need to consider the same. Have we become so callous in our own faith that we are unwilling to take it seriously? I am afraid so!

Because there are so many videos, I will not post each individual video, but instead will post the links to the pages that contain each video. Honestly, after the 2010 election I was ready to take a break from politics as I am a bit tired of all of the biting and personal attacks, but nonetheless, politics brings in the ratings and presidential elections get people really fired up.

Who do I like from this field? I don't know. Like all candidates there is good and bad in all of them. As a minister of the gospel I am more interested in promoting the gospel instead of politics, but politics is important nonetheless. Once the campaign begins (which will likely start in the first quarter of next year), then we'll have a better idea of who might become the nominee and whether or not President Barack Obama will win re-election or be defeated. Certainly the momentum is on the Republicans side, but that doesn't mean anything at this point.

Here is the last of 12 videos from Fox News on 12+ potential candidates in 2012. At this point in history, it is hard to tell who will run and who will become the nominee. The last candidate, Chris Christie, has the most fire power and many are pushing him to run. Some see him as our generations Ronald Reagan and I think there is some truth to that. Remember that Reagan lost ni the primaries while governor his first time around only to continue to become a rising star in the Republican party. For those interested in Presidential politics, the next two years should be interesting.

Life Up For Vote?: An Internet Couple To Decide on Abortion Based on an Online Vote - Is it s Hoax?

The internet is ablazed regarding the news that a Minnesota couple who have experienced two miscarriages are now debating on whether or not to abort their third child. Their decision will be based on an online vote. Need i say more. The website, the Blaze, writes:

Pete and Alisha Arnold, from the Minneapolis suburb of Apple Valley, have been married for 10 years and are pregnant for the fourth time. While the previous pregnancies ended in miscarriages, the Arnolds are hoping this one ends differently. They’re just unsure what “differently” will look like: a birth or an abortion.

So in September, they created the website birthornot.com and have posted about their unborn baby boy, providing health updates, ultrasound pictures, and even videos. They’ve also provided readers with a choice via a poll on the upper right of the site: “Should We Give Birth or Have an Abortion?” As of publication, the “Give Birth” option leads the “Have an Abortion” 54.54% to 45.46%.

As you can imagine pro-lifers are incensed and outraged that a couple would do such a thing. Pro-choicers, on the other hand, are calling the whole thing a hoax put on by a pro-life couple. Which is it? I don't know, and neither does anybody else. The folks over at Newsbusters have looked into the story and aren't yet convinced that this is the real thing. I too am skeptical and until there is some truth to the story I will withhold any detailed comment, however, obviously if this is a legitimate story, I am outraged that life could be subject to a vote. At the same time, I'm not surprised that anyone would come up with such a scenario. Life is so denigrated today that this sort of circuitry only makes sense. Can you imagine growing up knowing that you are alive based solely on a vote in your favor? We are living in a depraved world!

Fox News and the 12 in 2012: Mike Huckabee - Part 10

Fox News continues to do their series on 12 potential 2012 Republican candidates for President. Today it was on former governor and now Fox News host Mike Huckabee who as you may remember, came in second place (much because everyone else had already dropped out) in 2008 behind candidate Senator John McCain. Huckabee's key is among social conservatives and especially among Christians as Huckabee used to be Baptist pastor and his speaking abilities benefit him greatly. There is a lot to like about Huckabee and a lot to not like about him. It will be interesting to see if he decides to run in 2012.

The Unborn Do Have Rights: What a Double Homicide Reveals about the Law and our Moral Confusion

Once again the moral confusion of our culture is being illustrated through the charge of double homicide to a man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend. Because the man's girlfriend was pregnant, the murder of the woman counts as a double homicide since both the unborn child and the mother died. We must say that this is a right law and the man should be prosecuted for a double murder, however, isn't it hypocritical that this man is guilty of killing an innocent child who in this case has the legal right to life and yet if the accused murderer was a doctor who worked in an abortion clinic took the life of this child due to the "choice" of the mother, he would not be guilty of murder. That is hypocrisy. That is moral confusion. A culture that has lost all sense of morality and human dignity finds itself making such foolish decisions. If the child has rights in the eyes of the law in this case, why doesn't the child have the same rights at the abortion clinic?

For Louisville Cardinal Fans: Time to Adjust the Outlook?

I really enjoyed an article by Pat Forde at ESPN entitled, Time to Adjust Outlook for Louisville? The article argues that Louisville's opening victory over #16 Butler Bulldogs fresh off of their national championship appearance from March where they lost to Duke by just two points (and missed on a last second half court shot for the win).

Forde notes that no one is giving the Cardinals the time of day considering their poor performance last year (losing embarrasingly in the first round to California last March) and then losing essentially all of their starters (especially Samardo Samuels, Edgar Sosa, Jerry Smith, and others). Clearly it seemed that Louisville would not be that good of a team, but that outlook overlooks some of their other players who have not had much playing time and have proven themselves worthy of the spotlight like Peyton Sive (an McDonald's All-American) and others. Forde writes:

The score was Louisville 88, Butler 73. And for much of the game, it wasn't that close. Louisville never trailed, led by as many as 24 early in the second half and maintained a double-digit lead for the final 24 minutes, 50 seconds.

It was Butler's largest margin of defeat since the 2006 Horizon League championship game. And it was the most points the tempo-master Bulldogs have allowed in regulation since 1999.

So we learned something at the Yum! Center. There is no reason to overreact to a single November outcome -- Butler will be a good team over the long haul, and Duke does not need to look over its shoulder at the Cardinals -- but there is reason to adjust the outlook.

I agree with Forde. Though it is doubtful that Louisville will make a run for the regular season or post-season Big East championship or have a shot at the National Championship, I do believe that based on their performances in the last two games (the first game being an expedition) Louisville should at least be in the top 25 even between #20-25 and with Virginia Tech losing (ranked #24) perhaps Louisville should be given the credit they deserve.

Condoms to First Graders Again: The Trend Continues

The trend seems to be continuing. Now in Provincetown, MA school officials are offering condoms to students as young as first graders. For those who need help, first graders are about 6 years old. Follow the link at the bottom for more including a video on the story. The arguments presented in the story are typical. For those who favor the policy argue that "if parents aren't teaching them, then somebody else should," as one woman puts it in the video. The problem with this should be obvious: offering students free condoms isn't teaching. At the very least it is a rationale for the decision you assume they have already made. "Well, they're going to have sex anyways." Such a mindset only encourages pre-marital sex.

Others similarly argue that students are having sex at much younger ages and I believe that this is the case. AS a minister and former youth pastor, I have seen this trend myself. But the argument remains: does handing out free condoms solve anything? If we are complaining about how young we are sexualizing our children, then clearly the solution isn't to just hand out more condoms is it?

Expect this trend to only continue and this school is not the first to set forth such a policy. As parents lose authority and for many willingly give up their authority, schools and public institutions will continue to take the role of the parent in the lives of children. This is what always happens in a secular society where the educated and the elite are viewed as more qualified than the average parent.

Unless we have a revival of true repentance, the world of tomorrow will somehow be much worse and depraved than the world of today and sometimes that seems like an impossibility.

Fox News continues its series looking at 12 potential Presidential candidates in 2012. This time they looked at former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. As many may recall Romney ran in 2008 and essentially got 2nd place behind the nominee Senator John McCain. Many consider Romney the front runner for the Republican party but he has a lot of baggage that makes it difficult for him to win and the following video reveals that. However I will agree with Fox News' assessment that if the economy had turned sour earlier in 2007-2008, Romney would have been the nominee but since foreign policy and national security was the big issue during the primaries, McCain won the nomination.

The one face I am most interested in for a potential run against current President Barack Obama would be Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal. Jindal is a man of action, leadership, and ideas. He is articulate, despises teleprompters, and has proven himself to be a leader. Though right now little is known about the man and his chances of winning is rather difficult and a long shot, but it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

I must admit that a race between the charismatic President Obama and the charismatic Governor Bobby Jindal would be an exciting one.

One of the things I have noticed that has changed with the former President is how loose, honest, articulate, and comfortable he is. The Change in Colors: 2008 vs. 2010

I found the following two pictures interesting comparing the "color" of the country in 2008 and in 2010. The two maps show the Red/Blue dichotomy of the two elections. It is amazing how much changes in just two short years. The past three major elections (2006, 2008, and 2010) have been major shifting elections and is rather unusual. Who knows what to expect in 2012.

Colson on Environmental Genocide

Yesterday, author and Prison Fellowship Founder Charles Colson wrote on the subject of global warming, and genocide. He makes some important and interesting points taking us all the way back to the rise of Fascism in Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. In his Breakpoint article, Colson concludes:

On the environmental front, global-warming hysteria has given license to an anti-human view that portrays people as a problem to be managed. This ideology leads some to openly discuss the need for “culling” the human race, as if people were livestock.

Others talk about more vigorous and even coercive population-control measures as a way of “saving” the planet. One recent ad even portrayed a teacher blowing up students who weren’t committed to reducing their personal CO2 emissions! I’m not making this up!

Snyder’s argument reflects what happens when we abandon the biblical worldview, with its inherent dignity given to every single human life, and when we deny the sovereignty of God. Worldviews, as you’ve heard me preach so many times, do matter—not just in preventing climatic disaster—but in preventing human beings from being killed in the name of a human ideology.

I do think Colson is on to something here. Historically, environmentalism inherently has some dangerous ideas in it that would lead one to think of something as dangerous as genocide. As Colson points out, many hate large families because of their large carbon footprint. Therefore, they kill them through abortion and other means. Welcome to the world of secularism and environmentalism.

Endowed By Who?: "Creator" Makes a Comeback

Over the past month many have noticed the absence of the phrase Creator rightly quoted from the Declaration of Independence recited by President Barack Obama in recent speeches. Well, it seems Creator has made a comeback and I am glad that it has. Though one must still wonder why it was ever omitted in the first place.

Colbert on the View

Give Stephen Colbert credit, he has an ability to mock everyone and he does it here in response to two of the women on the View storming out during the conversation with Fox News host Bill O'Reilly. Though Colbert clearly sides with the women, he does see to it to get his own shots in at the same time.

Morality and the Role of Government: The Danger of Libertarianism

This is one of the reasons why I'm not a libertarian. Though I am sympathetic with many of their arguments and thing that what they profess is logical to a certain extent, I still have serious problems. The difference between a libertarian and myself is that I believe that human nature is flawed. Libertarians are the opposite and so seek to maximize liberty and freedom assuming that humans will use such freedom (at least in the broader society) for good. As a Christian conservative, I believe that government should be smaller than it is, but it still has its role and some moral issues are too important to leave for immoral, deprave men to decide.
